The new school term is a time of excitement and anticipation, but it can also bring about stress and anxiety for children facing the prospect of a new routine, environment and extended periods away from their family.
Parents are helping their children transition smoothly back to school by focusing on their emotional development and overall wellbeing. Children who are emotionally, as well as academically prepared for school are more capable of managing the stresses of the classroom and are better at fostering meaningful relationships with peers and teachers.
By nurturing their children’s emotional health, knowledge and social development, parents are building a strong foundation for success, helping to equip children with the tools to handle the demands of everyday school life, study and exams.
There are many activities that families can do to promote mind-body wellness both at home or on expert-led experiences, such as the wellbeing programmes at Zulal Wellness Resort by Chiva-Som. Professionally curated to prepare children with essential emotional life skills, these retreats take place in Khasooma, a private and peaceful coastal location to the north of Qatar at Zulal Discovery, a pioneering family destination.
The retreats encourage cognitive and physical development, stimulate tranquillity and creativity and subtly introduce the benefits of good nutrition and fitness. They nurture the all-important art of communication by promoting social connections with each other, their families and the world around them.

By establishing these lifelong habits early on, they not only enhance their well-being, but also lay the groundwork for holistic health, longevity, and a more balanced life in the future.
Since nutrition plays such a vital role in a child’s cognitive and physical development, by empowering them with knowledge, children can make better food choices. This helps them take ownership of their health, improves energy levels, and enhances concentration and overall wellbeing.
Held in the Cooking Studio, Zulal Wellness Resort’s cooking classes educate children on the nutritional benefits of various foods and offer a variety of tastes to suit different palates. Together, families can learn how to plan recipes, prepare lunchbox-friendly meals and foster positive eating habits in a peaceful and nurturing environment.
Physical fitness also plays a crucial role in academic performance and well-being. Regular exercise improves physical health, reduces sickness and supports cognitive function, helping them to stay focused and perform better academically. Exercise promotes emotional resilience, helping them to reduce school-related stress and anxiety by fostering a sense of accomplishment and self-confidence.
At Discovery Oasis, Zulal’s Family Wellness Centre, a hub of activity for children of all ages awaits. Men’s health is often an afterthought as the average man pays less attention to his health than the average woman. However, when it comes to health, men are more likely to experience chronic health conditions like – heart disease, diabetes, stroke, depression, and obesity earlier than women because of different lifestyle factors, biological and social factors. These include smoking, use of alcohol, stress, lack of exercise, unhealthy diets and they are less likely to see a doctor or health professional for regularly checkups. Another issue faced in men’s health which is often ignored is that of andrological or reproductive conditions.
A major factor underlying several andrological problems is poor management of the six essential lifestyle factors, especially those affecting the normal functioning of the reproductive system. In the practice of TAIM a great emphasis is put on diet/ nutritional supplements in maintaining and enhancing the reproductive system.
Commonly prevalent amongst the elderly population is the condition such as Benign prostatic hypertrophy (BPH), this is a common complaint amongst men over fifty. It increases in frequency with age. As many as 50% of men over 60 may have it. It often provokes anxiety, in the mistaken belief that it is a malignant/cancerous growth. Benign prostatic enlargement from a humoural theory perspective is an imbalance due to excessive coldness. Factors which encourage the onset and development of are lack of body movement which leads to reduced body heatness. Chronic constipation can also aggravate the condition.
At Zulal Wellness Resort a bespoke temperament balanced diet is prescribed by the inhouse specialist which the guest can follow within the resort and take back home. A unique TAIM inspired treatment at ZWR from the Holistic modality which can aid in many men’s health related conditions is that of Hijama/cupping therapy. Cupping is one of the oldest and most effective methods of releasing toxins from the body’s tissues and organs with many benefits in maintaining hormonal imbalance, reduce coldness or heatness of body and improves immunity. With men’s health issues on a rise in modern times, we are encouraging men to take better care of themselves, focus on mind, body and spirit practices and get a checkup regularly with their health professional.
With temperatures set to soar this summer, we’ve compiled a host of ways to cool down at Zulal Wellness Resort by Chiva-Som. Read on to discover the best ways to retreat from the heat in northern Qatar.
Breezy Does It
The coastal location on the northern tip of Qatar means Zulal Wellness Resort generally enjoys temperatures of between five to 10 degrees cooler than the city of Doha and other areas of the country, making it the ideal spot to retreat to when the weather heats up. An early morning or evening stroll around the expansive grounds that cover 280,000 sqm, with a fresh breeze coming in from the coast, is a wonderful escape from the sizzling city.
Snow-Brainer
If you really need to cool down-fast-head straight for the Arctic Cave in the wellness centre at Zulal Serenity. A few minutes spent in real, crisp snow and temperatures of -5 to -10 degrees Celsius will boost your circulation leaving your feel more alive than ever. Sometimes, a slight shock to the system is just what the doctor ordered.
Make A Splash
A less extreme option is taking the plunge in the saltwater lagoon at Zulal Discovery or a dip in one of the plunge pools in the adults-only Zulal Serenity – all temperature controlled at a pleasant 28 degrees. Even just dipping your feet in the water while sipping a cold drink will do the trick.
Cook Up A Storm
The saying ‘if you can’t take the heat, get out of the kitchen’ doesn’t apply to Zulal Wellness Resort’s air-conditioned food facilities. In fact, a cooking class is a fun and relaxing indoor activity to take your mind off the outside world. Why not engage all your senses learning a new recipe – such as the popular and flavoursome detox curry – which you can then prepare for family and friends at home.
Words To The Wise
If summer in the city feels like being stuck in a pressure cooker and you long for a bit of peace and quiet as well as a cooling shade, the library in House of Wisdom is a true haven. Here you’ll find 1,500 books donated by Qatar Library, on every subject under the sun.
Stretch It Out
Another great place to retreat from the heat is Zulal Wellness Resort’s state-of-the-art gymnasiums and functional fitness studio. Zulal Wellness Resort is the only facility in the Middle East to offer the Gyrotonic Method by qualified Gyrotonic trainers. When it’s too hot for a sweaty workout, Gyrotonic therapy is ideal as it’s designed to enhance spinal mobility, muscle tone and total body balance with a series of comfortable stretches. Guided sessions are curated just for you.
Find Your Zen
Sometimes you just need to unwind in your own little cocoon of stillness. What better way to cool down than with a pampering treatment in the spa? Try the Signature Seaweed Detox Body Scrub, a refreshing exfoliation therapy with locally sourced herbs; a spot of soothing balneotherapy; or a nourishing body wrap to hydrate dry and sun-damaged skin with a heavenly blend of essential oils.
In a world where the heat seems relentless and the desire for healthier social interactions is on the rise, nightime wellness experiences are emerging as the new trend. From stargazing under the vast night sky to full-moon meditations and rejuvenating spa rituals, Zulal Wellness Resort by Chiva-Som beckons guests to indulge in the serenity of the night.
Stargazing Adventures: Connecting with the Cosmos
In 2024, Astro tourism is at its peak, offering guests unparalleled opportunities to gaze at the wonders of the universe. Stargazing not only provides a sense of wonder but also encourages mindfulness and relaxation. It allows guests to disconnect from daily stresses and reconnect with the vastness of the universe, promoting a sense of peace and perspective.
Grounding Night Walks: Reconnecting with Nature
Under the gentle glow of the moon, guests can immerse themselves in grounding night walks through the resort’s mangrove walk. Surrounded by the sights and sounds of nature, these walks provide an opportunity to reconnect with the earth and find solace in its embrace. Whether wandering along moonlit pathways or exploring hidden trails, each step brings a renewed sense of vitality and connection to the natural world.
Night walks promote physical activity, improve cardiovascular health, and enhance mood and energy levels. They also offer an opportunity for quiet reflection and appreciation of nature’s beauty, fostering a sense of peace and well-being.
Siestas and Floating Meditations: Surrendering to Serenity
During the night, Zulal offers the opportunity to embrace the ancient tradition of the siesta—a restorative nap that rejuvenates the body and mind. Guests can also experience the bliss of floating meditations, where weightlessness and tranquillity merge to create a profound sense of relaxation. Drifting effortlessly in the warm waters, surrounded by the soothing sounds of nature, each moment becomes a sanctuary of peace and rejuvenation.
Siestas and floating meditations promote relaxation, reduce muscle tension, and improve sleep quality. They also encourage mindfulness and stress reduction, allowing guests to experience deep relaxation and inner peace.
Ice Baths: Invigorating the Body and Mind
As the focus of the ice bath is speeding recovery and decreasing inflammation, there are many reasons for us to do it at night, starting with the fact that it is the only time during our hot summer that we can be present outdoors to connect with nature. Ice baths offer a multitude of benefits, including:
Improved sleep: Cooling the body down before bedtime can promote better sleep by lowering core body temperature, which is conducive to falling asleep faster and experiencing deeper, more restorative sleep.
Muscle recovery: Ice baths can aid in muscle recovery by reducing inflammation and muscle soreness after a day of physical activity. This can help you wake up feeling more refreshed and ready for another day of exercise.
Stress relief: The cold-water immersion can trigger the release of endorphins, which are natural mood lifters, helping to alleviate stress and promote relaxation before bedtime.
Enhanced circulation: Ice baths can stimulate blood flow and improve circulation, which may help alleviate symptoms of certain circulatory issues and promote overall cardiovascular health.
Reduced insomnia symptoms: For individuals who struggle with insomnia or difficulty falling asleep, the cooling effect of an ice bath can help calm the body and mind, making it easier to drift off into a restful sleep.
Accelerated healing: Cold therapy has been shown to enhance the body’s natural healing processes, which can be particularly beneficial for injuries or strains sustained during the day. Taking an ice bath at night may expedite the healing process while you rest.
Mental clarity: Ice baths can help improve mental alertness and clarity by stimulating the central nervous system, making it easier to focus and concentrate during the day. This can indirectly contribute to better sleep quality at night.
Enhanced mood: The release of endorphins during and after an ice bath can contribute to a sense of well-being and positivity, which can set a positive tone for the evening and improve overall mood before bedtime.
Guided Hikes: Embracing the Nighttime Adventure
While daytime hikes might be hindered by the high UV of the day, nighttime guided hikes offer a unique opportunity to explore the natural surroundings of Zulal Wellness Resort under the enchanting glow of the moon. These nighttime adventures provide a plethora of benefits, including:
Cooler temperatures: Hiking at night during warmer months can provide relief from the heat, making it more comfortable and enjoyable.
Reduced crowds: Trails are often less crowded at night, allowing for a quieter and more peaceful hiking experience.
Stargazing: Away from city lights, nighttime hiking offers excellent opportunities for stargazing and enjoying the beauty of the night sky.
Unique atmosphere: Hiking under the moonlight or by the light of a headlamp creates a different ambiance and can add an element of adventure to your outing.

ABOUT ZULAL WELLNESS RESORT:
Zulal Wellness Resort by Chiva-Som is a unique wellbeing haven, brought to life by Qatar’s premier master developers, Msheireb Properties. Zulal Wellness Resort by Chiva-Som is the Middle East’s first and largest immersive wellness destination. Located in Khasooma, a private coastal location to the north of Qatar, Zulal is inspired by the Arabic word for ‘pure natural water’ and is the first wellness resort in the world to blend the holistic wisdom of Traditional Arabic Islamic Medicine (TAIM) with modern therapies and health practices. Aiming to inspire positive and sustainable lifestyle change, the property offers two distinct wellness experiences. Zulal Serenity is a child-free oasis designed for reflective and mindful wellbeing journeys while Zulal Discovery invites guests of all ages, particularly families, to reconnect and explore the joys of healthy living through a wellness lifestyle.
Not only is proper nutrition the foundation of good health, good food is also nourishing to the soul. The cuisine at Zulal Wellness Resort is carefully and artistically prepared to cater to our guests’ wellbeing and individual needs. While mostly gluten free and sugar free, the food is still delicious as it is made with organically grown produce and the very finest ingredients. Special attention is given to nutrient-dense and fermented foods that improve gut health and digestion.
Like every other aspect at the resort, our cuisine is inspired by the wellness wisdom of Traditional Arabic and Islamic Medicine (TAIM), and our menus include a range of Quranic foods and healing herbs. For example, you may enjoy a cold melon soup – refreshing, hydrating and seasoned with cinnamon for a metabolism-boosting kick. Similarly, the divine pomegranate gazpacho with olive oil is inspired by the holiest health advice of all as pomegranate was praised by the prophet Muhammad, who said: “Whoever eats pomegranate, Allah will light his heart for forty nights.” In fact, the holy Quran mentions pomegranate as one of the fruits found in paradise, and the Imams have always stressed its importance in Islamic medicine as “eating sweet and sour pomegranates, empowers man and refines the blood.”
Olive oil is also mentioned in the Quran. The prophet said: “Eat the olive oil and apply it (locally), since it is a cure for seventy diseases, one of them being leprosy”. Olives are said to be the food of prophets as they are excellent for skin and hair, anti-ageing, and anti-inflammatory for the gut. According to TAIM, regular consumption of olives may also lower the risk of developing rheumatoid arthritis as the oil lubricates the joints.
In TAIM, there is also great emphasis on the use of herbs such as rosemary, basil, turmeric, ginger, lemongrass, star anise, and black cumin. The latter is the black seed referred to by the prophet, who once stated that “the black seed can heal every disease, except death.” In the medical encyclopaedia The Canon of Medicine, the Persian philosopher-physician Avicenna (980–1037 AD) refers to black cumin, known by its Latin name nigella sativa, as the seed that stimulates the body’s energy and aids recovery from fatigue. You’ll find an abundance of healing herbs not only in the dishes prepared in our restaurants, but also in their dried form in our Apothecary, located in the resort’s House of Wisdom.
These are only a few examples of TAIM-inspired ingredients found in our wellness cuisine, but its food philosophy influences our whole approach to nutrition. Our guests’ individual meal plans are based on the TAIM principle that eating according to your temperament and body type will make the body absorb nutrients more efficiently. Equally, our chefs pay careful attention to appropriate portion sizes – i.e. not too large – as moderation is another important principle in TAIM.
Overall, and in line with TAIM, the culinary experience at Zulal Wellness Resort is underpinned by the belief that eating healthily sustains a wholesome way of life. Across our four dining outlets spanning Middle Eastern and international cuisines, you will find delicious and nutritious dishes bursting with flavour and fresh produce, and created to boost joy, energy vitality, and longevity. Come and taste them for yourself!
Traditional Arabic and Islamic Medicine or TAIM, encompasses a holistic approach to wellness based on the traditional principles derived from ancient physicians and focuses mainly on lifestyle wellness practices. It contains an abundant source of ancient healing wisdom and guidelines for healthy living, much of which has been forgotten over time.
Though some may not be familiar with the science behind it, it is inherent to the modern life in the Middle East. Knowing this, our aim at Zulal Wellness Resort is to build awareness of TAIM and bring it to the forefront of the wellness industry in Qatar, the region, and the world.
With renewed interest around holistic living, we at Zulal Wellness Resort have created bespoke wellness therapies with state-of-the-art facilities that incorporate TAIM medicine’s healing wisdom whilst showcasing Qatar’s rich and valuable medicinal resources.
2. Many Practices Of TAIM Are Evident In Various Aspects Of The Culture And Traditions in the Arab world. Could you share how Zulal Wellness Resort has incorporated these?
Tibb is a branch of knowledge that tackles the state of health and disease in the human body for the purpose of adopting suitable measures to preserve and restore health. Common misconception is its association to Hijama but in addition to providing the benefits of Hijama, Tibb uses food and herbs as medicine.
Tibb encompasses our way of life, our daily behavior and our personal habits which play a vital role in determining whether we are healthy, and aids to examine our likelihood to succumb to a disease and ultimately analyzes our rate of recovery from a disorder.
At Zulal Wellness Resort we believe wellness is a way of life, it is the essence of our being. Being the first wellness resort dedicated to TAIM, we have placed an integral focus on reconnecting all its elements to create a wide range of therapeutic and lifestyle enhancement treatments based on traditional Arabic and Islamic wellness principles. We are very excited to offer this to the region and the world, in hopes that these positive wellness experiences will inspire others to adopt and maintain healthy lifestyles.
3. As a TAIM practitioner, what are common health issues in the region, and how can a retreat at Zulal Wellness Resort help individuals?
Three very common health issues that surface in this region are high blood pressure, obesity and constipation.
Blood pressure
The TAIM system attributes two instances that contribute to a spike in an individual’s blood pressure:
At Zulal Wellness Resort we recommend a diet rich in herbs like garlic, pepper, ginger, celery, lemon, hibiscus tea, olive leaf extract and saffron to naturally manage an individual’s blood pressure.
Obesity
Ibne Sina writings featured the taqleel ghiza (decreasing food intake) as an important tool for weight management. At Zulal Wellness Resort we would share recommendations not immediately eating after a bath but rather wait and take a short nap instead. Also for example, consuming fenugreek seeds and black seeds on an empty stomach with warm water can help reduce obesity. These gems of wisdom will be shared with our guests to follow during their stay and beyond.
And Finally for Constipation
