Healing the Gut : An Ayurvedic Approach

Everything in the universe is comprised of the qualities of the five elements: earth, air, fire, water, and space. These five elements make up the three doshas: Vata (space and air), Pitta (fire and water), and Kapha (earth and water). Everyone possesses varying levels of these three doshas. Vata governs the nervous system, circulation, movement, and the body’s upward and downward flows. Kapha governs lubrication, immunity, structure, and strength. When it comes to digestion and metabolism, Pitta is the key player.

Pitta governs the metabolic processes primarily using the energy of fire. For this reason, heat is important in the breakdown of food, absorption of nutrients, and elimination of toxic build-up. The human gut contains 10 times more bacteria than all the human cells in the entire body. This bacterium promotes normal gastrointestinal function, protects us from infection, regulates metabolism, and comprises more than 75 percent of our immune system. To support effective absorption and digestion of nutrients we need to support our gut with foods that act that way.

Aloe – Mint Smoothie

This recipe includes ingredients to cool and soothe the digestive system and work on pitta balance (metabolic balance). Aloe vera helps heal the lining of a damaged intestinal tract improving gut permeability. Coconut oil a medium chain fatty acid turns into monolaurin once it reaches your gut. This acts as a powerful antimicrobial agent helping to rebalance the bacteria in the gut while suppressing inflammation. Berries, avocado, mint, and ginger provide healthy antioxidants and soothing properties. This smoothie is a great breakfast with ample energy and satiety for hours.
